Department of Law, Society & Development (LSD) at the Faculty of Law Universitas Indonesia is arguably the oldest interdisciplinary legal studies department in Indonesia. We stand on the shoulder of giants in the early law & society movement in Indonesia, namely Professor Selo Soemardjan, Professor T.O. Ihromi, and Professor Soerjono Soekanto.

Today we are entering an era when traditional legal studies cannot stand alone facing the disruption and complexity in our societies. We are facing extremism and violent as the consequences of what Huntington called as “clash of civilizations”, quick-paced globalization, energy transitions, disruptive technological innovation, or even the possibility of human settlement in Mars.

Normative character in traditional legal studies is not sufficient to fully understand such disruption and complexity. We need to study the anatomy of society and its culture. We need to study law in its social context.

Up to present, our researchers and faculty members has been conducting interdisciplinary research on 6 areas, namely 1) Gender Perspectives on Law; 2) Law, Society & Globalization; 3) Law & Social Welfare Policy; 4) Law & Identity Politics; 5) Law, Society & Natural Resources, and 6) Law, Science, Technology & Society (LSTS).

Sincerely,

Prof. Dr. Sulistyowati Irianto
Head of the Department of Law, Society & Development
